Territorial sea is a term used to indicate the sovereignty of coastal nations over the waters adjacent to their land boundaries. There are different synonyms for territorial sea, such as coastal waters, exclusive economic zone, contiguous zone, and internal waters. Coastal waters refer to the area within 12 nautical miles from the coast, over which the coastal state has complete control. Exclusive economic zone (EEZ), on the other hand, extends up to 200 nautical miles from the coastline, giving the coastal state regulatory jurisdiction over natural resources and economic activities in that zone. The contiguous zone is a band of water that extends up to 24 nautical miles from the coastline, over which the coastal state has limited jurisdiction. Finally, internal waters refer to the navigable waters near the coast and within the territorial boundaries of a state, over which the state has complete control.
