Tectiviridae is a family of small, enveloped viruses that infect bacteria. Although the term Tectiviridae is specific to this particular family, there are synonyms that can be used to refer to viruses within the same group. Some of these synonyms include Tectivirus, Spounavirinae, and Guttaviridae. Tectivirus is a common name for viruses within the genus Tectivirus. Spounavirinae is a subfamily of viruses within the family of Myoviridae, which contain viruses with similar morphology, genome, and transcription strategy to Tectiviridae. Lastly, Guttaviridae is a proposed family of dsDNA viruses that infect archaea, which were previously classified as part of Tectiviridae.
